Quick answer ·
Pain and the problem often don't match. A small joint that stopped gliding can hurt more than a finding on a scan. What opens and closes the door in your spine.
Why does it always come back?
Most people I meet have already tried the sensible things. A pill when it flares up. A massage when the shoulders lock. Rest on Sunday. And every one of those helps — for a while. Then Monday comes and it’s back, and after enough Mondays you stop mentioning it to anyone.
Your body doesn’t send pain. It sends a report.
Think of the nerve endings in your muscles and joints as sensors in a building. They don’t decide anything. They just report — there’s pressure here, this is stretched. The report travels up your spine, and the brain is the one that decides what to do with it.
Which is why the pain and the problem so often don’t match. A small joint that has stopped gliding properly can hurt more than you’d believe. A big-looking finding on a scan can sit there quietly for ten years.
There is a door in your spine.
Before any of it reaches your brain, it has to pass a spot in the back of your spinal cord that works like a door. Door open, the report goes up and you feel it. Cells there pull it shut, and the report stops right where it is — never becoming pain at all.
You already know this door. Bang your elbow on a corner and your hand flies to it before you’ve even thought about it. Rubbing doesn’t fix the elbow — but touch runs on the fast wire, so it reaches the door first and pulls it shut behind itself.
Your grandmother knew it worked long before anyone could explain it.
So what closes it.
Medication turns the volume down on the alarm. That matters — when pain is loud you can’t sleep, and when you can’t sleep everything hurts more. But it works on the alarm, not on whatever set it off, so when it wears off the door swings open again.
Massage is the same thing your hand does at the elbow, done properly and for longer. It genuinely closes the door. It’s someone holding it shut for you — which feels wonderful, and lasts about as long as they’re holding it.
A chiropractic adjustment works further back. Instead of holding the door, it goes and looks at why the door won’t stay shut — usually a joint that has quietly stopped moving the way it should, sending an irritable report every time you bend. Restore that joint’s motion and the report itself changes.
Rehabilitation is what keeps it that way. Once a joint moves again, the muscles around it have to learn to look after it — otherwise the body drifts back to the pattern it has used for years.
Fix the hinge, then hold the door.
If a door in your house keeps drifting open, you don’t stand there holding it. You look at the hinge. The adjustment is the hinge work. But a hinge out of line for years has taught the whole frame to lean — and that’s what rehabilitation is for.
Done together, they cover each other. The adjustment gets you the motion that makes training possible — you can’t teach a joint that hurts every time it moves. And the training is what makes the motion stay. That is why the adjustment and the rehab happen in the same room here.
The part you can’t do at home isn’t the exercise. It’s knowing which hinge.
Two people can walk in describing exactly the same low back pain and need completely different things. In one, the stiff joint is higher up and the sore spot is just taking the extra load. In the other, the sore spot is the loose one, and it needs steadying, not more stretching. Stretch that and it feels good for an hour and worse by evening — that’s not bad luck, it’s the wrong hinge.
You’ve managed it on your own for a long time. You don’t have to keep doing that part alone.
