What I'll be holding, and why

What I'll be holding, and why

Quick answer ·

The three tools Dr. Yun reaches for, from the neck to the heel, what each one does, and why he chooses it. Worth reading before a first visit.

Patients sometimes ask me which machine is for which problem, and I understand why — most clinics present it that way. But that isn't how these work.

None of the three were built for one joint. What they're built for is tissue that has stopped sliding the way it should.

That happens in a neck, a shoulder, a low back, a calf, the sole of a foot — and yes, a wrist. The tool doesn't change. Only where I point it does.

So this isn't a menu to choose from. Below is simply what sits within arm's reach of the table, and the thinking behind each one.

Warmth goes in first

Cold metal on a sore muscle makes you brace before we've done anything at all. Warm the tissue and it softens — the same pressure now goes deeper and feels kinder.

It's the difference between working cold butter and butter that's been sitting on the counter.

That's usually why this one comes out first: everything after it gets easier.

Then something steadier than a thumb

Fingers tire. Ten minutes in, no thumb is delivering the pressure it delivered at the start.

A precision edge holds the same angle and the same weight from the first pass to the last.

And because it has several different edges, I can sweep a broad face along a calf or set a narrow tip on a single point at the base of your thumb — without losing the feedback in my own hands.

Then fast, very short vibration

Push hard enough to reach deep tissue and the body pushes back. Muscles guard, and you lose what you just gained.

Short, rapid strokes slip underneath that reflex. Less force, more depth, and nobody has to grit their teeth.

It's especially useful when I'm following a long nerve pathway rather than working one spot.

The same three, neck to heel

A stiff neck that won't turn all the way. A shoulder that catches when you reach for a seatbelt. A low back that tightens by evening.

Calves that feel like rope after a long shift. A heel that hurts most on the first step out of bed. A wrist that goes numb at three in the morning.

Different complaints, same underlying problem — tissue that has stopped gliding.

That's why you'll see the same three come out no matter what brought you in.

What they don't do

These are not a substitute for a diagnosis, and they aren't right for everyone or every day.

Fresh injuries, open skin, recent surgery, and a few medical conditions all change the answer.

We'll talk it through before anything touches you.
