Six Thousand Miles for One Question

Quick answer ·

How this clinic came to exist: twelve years on a gym floor, one question, and the move to study chiropractic in the United States. Part one of two.

I want to tell you how this clinic came to exist, because it explains more about how I will treat you than any list of credentials could. It is a long story, so I have split it in two. This first part is about Korea, and about why I left it.

Twelve years on a gym floor ·

For twelve years I was a personal trainer in Seoul. For six of those years, the gym was mine.

Twelve years on a gym floor shows you every kind of body there is. Competitive athletes in season. Nurses and clinicians who stand for ten hours and then come in to train. Office workers whose necks have seized by Wednesday. Children brought in by anxious parents. Mothers and fathers whose backs went out lifting a toddler. Older members who simply wanted to keep carrying their own groceries.

Different ages, different jobs, different bodies — and exercise helped them. It helped enormously. Until, for some of them, it simply stopped.

I could make almost anyone stronger. I could not always make them better.

I did not know why. That gap sat with me for years, and eventually it stopped being a professional problem and became a personal one.

What chiropractic actually is · 카이로프랙틱이란 무엇인가

Let me be plain about this, because many people are not quite sure — I was not, either, at first.

A Doctor of Chiropractic is a licensed provider trained to examine, diagnose and treat problems of the spine, joints, muscles and nerves. In the United States it is a doctoral degree: roughly four years of full-time clinical study after a university degree, followed by national board examinations and a separate state license.

The training is not only technique. It is physical examination, imaging, and differential diagnosis. A large part of it is learning what chiropractic cannot solve, and recognising the moment to send you somewhere else. We do not prescribe medication and we do not perform surgery.

The main tool is the adjustment — a precise, controlled movement applied to a joint that has stopped moving as it should. For low back pain, spinal manipulation appears in the large majority of clinical practice guidelines worldwide. The evidence is solid for neck pain and for certain headaches as well.

What it is not is a cure for everything. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling, not treating.

When I understood that this was a field with examination, diagnosis and limits, not just a set of hands, I knew it was the missing half of what I had been doing on the gym floor.

Why it had to be that school ·

Some of my professors in Korea had trained as chiropractors in the United States, most of them at the same school. That was the first time I heard of it, and once I looked into it there was not much left to decide.

If chiropractic has a birthplace, it is a street corner in Davenport, Iowa. The first adjustment was performed there on September 18, 1895. Two years later the man who performed it opened the world's first chiropractic school on a bluff above the Mississippi River, a few blocks from where it happened. The school is still standing on that same bluff.

The profession calls that school the Fountainhead — the source everything else flowed from.

It is the oldest and it is the largest. More than one in three practising chiropractors anywhere in the world graduated from it. Eight of the eighteen chiropractic colleges in the United States were founded by its graduates. Its alumni work in more than seventy countries. The largest chiropractic research centre and the largest chiropractic library in the world are both on that campus.

I did not choose it for the history. If you are going to spend four years and your family's savings on something, you want to learn it where the standard was set.

Somewhere that would not let me graduate having memorised a technique and nothing else.

The decision ·

Knowing where to go did not make it an easy decision. The gym was doing well. My daughter had just turned two.

My wife and I talked about it for a long time. However far the conversation went, it always came back to the same two things: a family should not be split up, and if we are together we will manage somehow.

So we closed the gym, packed what would fit, and the three of us got on a plane.

The second part begins in Davenport, with a sentence I was not expecting.
