Reading What Your Body Has Written

Quick answer ·

Ever left a clinic unsure what the paper in your hand meant? A plain-language guide to reading your posture and movement findings.

If you've ever left a clinic holding a piece of paper you didn't really understand, you are not alone.

Most of us nod along to words we can't follow, and go home carrying the very question we walked in with. So what is actually going on with my body?

You were told a name for it. You may even have been shown an image. But somehow nobody explained the one thing you actually wanted to know — how this started, and what happens next.

This is written for that moment. Not to hand you a verdict, but to sit beside you and read, slowly, what your body has been quietly writing all these years.

One · Today Is Not a Verdict. It Is an Explanation.

Most people sit down a little tense when they come back for results. What if it's really bad. What if he says surgery. I know that feeling, and I don't take it lightly.

So let me say this first. What I'm doing today is not putting a name on your condition. I'm opening a map and showing you where you are standing right now.

When you land in an unfamiliar city, what you need isn't someone telling you it's a rough neighbourhood. You need a piece of paper with your own location on it, where you're headed, and the road between the two.

A body you understand is a body you take care of. Care that skips the explanation doesn't last, no matter how precise it is.

This visit is not a verdict. It is a map, opened between us.

Two · Your Body Is One Connected Network

Signals begin in the brain, travel down the spinal cord, and slip out through small openings between the vertebrae — the intervertebral foramina — on their way to your arms, your legs, every corner of you.

Which means your spine holds down two jobs at the same time: protect that pathway, and move well. Two demands that pull against each other, carried by one structure, for an entire lifetime.

When that balance tips — one segment moving more than its share, another barely moving at all — the tissue around it becomes irritable. Muscles tighten to guard the area. Less movement, and the load piles back onto that same segment.

Pain is the end of that loop, not the beginning.

The spine has two jobs that pull against each other: protect the pathway, and move freely.

Three · Where It Hurts Isn't Always Where It Started

Water stains appear on the bedroom ceiling, but the leak is on the far side of the roof. Paint over the stain and it comes back with the next rain.

Bodies do the same. The shoulder hurts, but the stiff part is the middle of the back. The knee hurts, but the hip is the one that quietly stopped doing its job.

Work only where it hurts and it feels better that day. A few days later, it usually returns.

So after I find the sore spot, I always look above it and below it — to find what stopped working, and left this place carrying the extra.

Where it hurts and where it started are often two different places.

Four · This Map Wasn't Drawn Overnight

Turn over a pair of shoes you've worn for years and one side is worn down further. The shoes weren't made wrong. The way you walk got written into them.

The bag always on the same shoulder. The leg you always cross. The hours of sitting. The ankle you rolled ten years ago and figured had healed. A season of not sleeping enough, breath riding high in the chest.

Not one of these matters on its own. But over years, the body learns the pattern and keeps it.

So I want to be clear about something. You didn't do anything wrong. This is what a life lived diligently leaves behind — and it can be read, and once it's read, it can be worked on.

Your body did not fail you. It recorded you.

Five · An Image Is a Map, Not a Verdict

Cut a tree and you see the rings. Some years narrow, some wide, one side pressed in where the wind came from. Rings are a record of seasons — not proof that the tree is sick. Films are the same.

Let me be honest with you about something. What shows up as degenerative change on an image does not necessarily mean today's pain. People with no symptoms at all show similar changes. And some people with beautifully clean films hurt a great deal.

So I never conclude from an image alone. The image, what my hands find, how you move, and the story you tell me — when all four point to the same place, that is when I call it the cause.

What the image tells me is this: how the structure has been sharing load, which segment has been moving least, and what is safe for you right now versus what to leave alone for a while.

If change has already happened, I won't tell you we can undo it. But how fast it moves, and how much that segment has to carry — those we can change. That isn't a sales line. It's simply true.

Growth rings are a record of seasons, not a diagnosis of decay.

Six · Recovery Happens in Three Layers

One adjustment doesn't do it. Recovery happens in layers, and in order.

First — Easing. Take the load off the irritated segment and pain settles; the muscles that were guarding let go. You have to be able to move, and movement is where recovery begins.

Second — Sharing. The work one segment was carrying alone gets divided again among the ones above and below. Ease off what has been overworking; wake up what has been asleep.

Third — Remembering. Your body accepts the new alignment as its default. My hands can't do this part alone — breathing, and a few movements at home, have to come with it. Where you send your breath creates the pressure inside your trunk, and that pressure supports your spine from within.

An arch doesn't hold because one stone is exceptionally strong. It holds because every stone carries a little. Recovery works the same way.

First it eases. Then it shares the load. Then it remembers.

Seven · The Body Drifts Back to What It Knows

Open a sheet of paper that has been folded a long time. Let go and it folds itself again along the crease. One press won't do it — you smooth it slowly, many times, before the paper accepts a new shape.

Your body has held its current state for a very long time. To your body, that is normal. So early on, you may feel better and then feel it slide back.

That is not failure. It is expected. I'm telling you now so it doesn't startle you into stopping.

So we go in stages: easing, then settling, then keeping. Please remember that last one. It isn't only for when it hurts — it's the check-up you do while things are fine. The same reason you don't wait for a cavity to see a dentist.

Your body will drift back toward what it knows. That is not failure — it is memory.

Eight · We'll Walk This Together

Thank you for reading this far. I'd like to close with a promise.

What I promise you — I won't move on without explaining; you'll always know why we're doing what we're doing today. I'll tell you honestly whether you're improving or not. And if there comes a point where chiropractic isn't the answer, I'll say so plainly and connect you with someone better suited.

What I'll ask of you — Ask me right there in the room; the smaller the question, the better. Keep up the two or three things at home; I won't give you many. And tell me what changed — what got better, and what stayed the same.

Your goal doesn't end at being out of pain. It's living without pain while doing the things you want to do. That is where I intend to walk with you.

If you're ready, let's begin.
