The pelvis doesn't clock out when the baby arrives

Quick answer ·

Most pregnancy advice stops at the delivery room door. What happens to the pelvis after birth, and why many parents say their back got worse at four months.

Hi, this is Levitas Chiropractic and Wellness in Edmonds. Are you waking up at night because of your back?

Almost everything written about pregnancy and the pelvis stops at the delivery room door. As if the body resets that night.

It doesn't. And that part rarely comes up.

The one that stops you mid step ·

There's a pain in pregnancy that most people never put a name to. You stand up from a chair, or roll over, or sneeze, and something catches sharply low down at the front. Groin, or just inside the hip bone. A second or two, and it's gone.

That's usually the round ligament. It runs from the upper side of your uterus down through the groin, and every week it's asked to stretch a little further.

Most people never mention it. It passes so fast that by the time you'd finish describing it, it's gone.

The hammock ·

Your uterus isn't floating on its own. Ligaments hold it. Picture a hammock. When both ropes are even, it hangs level.

Pull one rope tighter than the other and the hammock still holds. Everything just sits at an angle, and the tight rope is the one that complains.

Those ropes are tied to your pelvis. So a pelvis sitting slightly off level doesn't only make your back ache. It changes how hard each ligament has to pull. That's why the sharp one is so often on one side only.

It doesn't end at delivery ·

The hormones that softened your ligaments don't switch off the moment the baby is out. That softness fades over months, not overnight. If you're breastfeeding, it takes longer still.

So for a good while after birth you're walking around on a pelvis that still moves more easily than it used to. Except now you're not resting. You're lifting.

The new job ·

Think about what the first year actually asks of a body.

You carry a growing weight on one hip, almost always the same hip.

You lift a car seat out with one arm, twisted, at the worst possible angle.

You feed in the same chair, leaning the same way, thirty minutes at a time, eight times a day.

You bend over a crib rail set at a height that suits no one.

Every one of those pulls to one side. Every one lands on a pelvis that hasn't firmed back up yet.

This is why so many parents tell me their back got worse at four months, not at four weeks.

Cleared isn't the same as recovered · 6

The six week check clears you for activity. It's an important appointment and it does its job.

But being cleared to move and moving the way you used to are two different things. The second one rarely gets asked about.

If something still catches at three months, or six, that's worth paying attention to. That's a body that carried something for forty weeks and then started carrying it on the outside.

What I actually do about it · 그래서 제가 하는 일

I look at how your pelvis is sitting, whether it moves evenly from side to side, and where one side has been carrying more than the other.

Then a correction at one specific point, with very little force. During pregnancy and for months afterward the ligaments are soft, so range of motion looks wider than it really is. That extra range is looseness rather than stability, so it makes sense to use less force, not more.

Sometimes I use an instrument, because it delivers less force and delivers it the same way every time.

If I find something that belongs with someone else, I'll say so and point you there.

Then we talk about the carrying. Which hip, which arm, which chair. That part goes home with you, and it keeps working when I'm not there.

What I don't decide ·

Where your baby settles, and how your birth goes, those aren't mine to call. Your obstetrician or midwife is watching that closely, and they should be. It's their expertise, not mine.

What I look after is you. Your pelvis, your back, how you move through the day. I like being clear about that, because knowing exactly what someone does makes it easier to trust them with it.

Now, once your baby is here, that's a different conversation. Bring them along. I'd love to meet the little one.

And then you go home ·

You'll go home with something to try. How to switch hips before one side becomes the default. How to get a car seat out without twisting. One feeding position that doesn't cost you anything.

Whether you're still pregnant or holding a six month old, it's the same pelvis. It just changed jobs.

Come in, let's talk it through, and see what would actually help. I'd like the rest of this to be a little lighter for you.
