Quick answer ·
If your back hurt more after the exercises, you did nothing wrong. An honest look at what a chiropractic adjustment can and cannot do.
Kilbo Yun, D.C.
Almost every week, someone sits down across from me and says the same thing. My back started hurting, so I started doing planks. And now it hurts more. And then, almost always, one more sentence follows: I don't know what I did wrong.
You didn't do anything wrong.
I like planks. I really do. But asking a back that is already sounding an alarm to hold a plank is a little like starting swimming lessons with someone who hasn't caught their breath yet. Nothing about the exercise was wrong. It simply arrived before the thing that had to come first.
The brake you never pressed —
When a joint in your back is irritated, the muscles around it tighten and hold on. You didn't choose that, and you can't choose to stop it — it happens the way your eyes close when something comes toward your face. It is your body trying to protect you, and it means well.
For the first few days that guarding is genuinely useful. After that, it settles in as a brake you never pressed and cannot reach.
So if you have been telling yourself to just push through, and it hasn't worked, that isn't a shortage of effort. You were asking your willpower to do something it was never able to do. The pedal is being held down by a part of you that doesn't take requests.
Something I would rather you hear from me — 저한테서 먼저 들으셨으면 하는 이야기
I am not putting a bone back into place. When spines have been imaged before and after an adjustment, no lasting change in position has been found. When lumbar movement was measured afterward, it did not go up.
You may well have been told something different somewhere else. I'm not saying this to take anything away from anyone. I'd just rather you heard it from me, sitting here, than found it later on your own.
What I can tell you is what I have watched happen, over and over, in the ten minutes afterward. It isn't the architecture that changes. It's the alarm.
So what is it for — 그러면 교정은 왜 하는가
Here is what has actually been measured. After an adjustment the muscles around that segment settle, and people move more freely — the spine shifts and resettles more during ordinary sitting than it did before.
That is a window. I'd rather not call it a repair. For a while the brake is off and there is room to move, and what happens in that room is really the point of the visit. That part belongs to you.
The day the cast comes off — 깁스를 푸는 날
Think of an arm that has been in a cast for six weeks. On the day it comes off, the elbow doesn't want to straighten yet. Nobody hands that person a dumbbell. First you help the elbow move again, and then you build strength into the range you got back.
Go the other way round and you are loading a joint that can't yet reach where it needs to go. The load doesn't disappear. It moves somewhere else, and somewhere else quietly pays for it.
I spent twelve years training people before I ever adjusted anyone. If that decade taught me one thing, it's that strength built on top of a joint that cannot move doesn't stay where you put it. I've watched it too many times to pretend otherwise.
Then strength, in the order that works —
When we say core, most people picture a flat stomach, and so most people go and do sit-ups. I understand why — it's what all of us were shown. It is also, unfortunately, one of the more common ways a sore back becomes a sorer one.
For a back, core means something much quieter: being able to keep your spine still while your hips do the moving. That is the whole skill. Lifting a laundry basket, getting out of the car, picking up a grandchild — the same small skill, again and again.
And the rule for adding load is boring, which is exactly why it works. Start where it doesn't hurt. Add a little more than last week — not more than you feel like today, more than last week. On the days you don't feel like doing anything, doing a little is already the whole thing.
An adjustment opens the window. What you do in the room is yours.
The part I'm stubborn about — 제가 고집부리는 부분
Guidelines for long-standing back pain now list both hands-on care and structured exercise among the things worth offering, and they say plainly that none of them should be given on its own. I agree with that, and I'll go one step further, because I have watched it: an adjustment without the work runs out of road. The work without the window is miserable, so people stop — and then they blame themselves. That last part is what I mind most.
My hope is that you come to see me less. I know that's an odd thing to print in a clinic brochure. It's still what I want. The day a bad week arrives and you handle it yourself — you know what to ease off, you know what to keep doing, and it doesn't frighten you anymore — that is the day this worked.
When to come sooner —
Pain that eases and comes back is ordinary, and we can work with it together. Please never feel you are being a bother by asking. These three, though, are a different kind of thing:
Weakness in a leg that is getting worse —
Numbness spreading through the area you would sit on — 앉을 때 바닥에 닿는 부위의 감각이 둔해지는 경우
Any change in bladder or bowel control —
These don't wait for an appointment. Please go to an emergency department that same day. It isn't an overreaction, and nobody will think it is.
Motion first, then strength. And after that, mostly, you. There is no hurry in this.
