A Room Can Greet You Before Anyone Does

Quick answer ·

Why the front desk sits at waist height, why there's water by the door, and a room for kids. How we designed the entry before the treatment room.

I spent longer thinking about the front door than about the treatment room. Not the table, not the equipment — the door, and the eight or nine steps that come after it.

Most people who come to see me have already told this story somewhere else. They explained it once, felt rushed, and left without being sure anyone had really listened. By the time they get to my door, they are tired of explaining.

So the first thing this place has to do is make it easy to start talking again.

The mark on the wall /

The shape is layers, stacked, holding each other up. That is the whole idea of this place, honestly. Nothing in the body works by itself. The neck borrows from the mid back. The low back pays for what the hips stopped doing. When one layer gives up, the ones above and below quietly carry it — until they can't.

So when you point at a sore spot, I don't assume that's where it began. I look at what's underneath it, and what's on top of it.

Why the counter is low /

The reception counter is waist height on purpose. Standing in front of it, you are at eye level with whoever is sitting behind it — no one has to look up to ask a question, and no one has to lean over to answer one. It was the first thing we decided about this room. Everything else was built around that height.

And there is cold water right by the door. A small thing — but most people arrive a few minutes early and end up standing there with nothing to do with their hands.

The room we built for children /

Parents cancel more appointments than anyone else. Not because the pain went away — because there was no one to watch the kids. So we made them a room: books, a soft rug, low stools, a lamp we leave on.

Bring them. They'll be fine, and you'll be able to finish a sentence.

Children are patients here, not just visitors /

They get the same exam an adult gets — blood pressure, temperature readings along the spine, how they move and where they don't. And we explain each step to the child directly, rather than talking only to the parent over their head.

The care itself is far gentler than most people picture. Usually an instrument, a very small amount of pressure, done in a moment. What children tend to remember is that someone told them what was going to happen first.

Carrying two / 둘을 안고

Pregnancy moves your center of gravity forward, the pelvis tips, and the low back quietly absorbs the difference all day long. None of that is something you simply have to put up with until it's over.

Positioning, pressure and pace are all adjusted to you. You never have to fit yourself to the table.

The table waits /

The table looks serious. It is. But it waits. We sit and talk first — what you do all day, which position makes it worse, when it started, what you've already tried. That conversation decides most of what happens next.

We look first, and we look with numbers /

[이미지 7] IMG_9491 — 계측기 클로즈업 alt: Instrumentation used to read paraspinal skin temperature / 척추 양옆 피부 온도를 읽는 계측기

These instruments read skin temperature down both sides of the spine. Where the two sides disagree, something nearby is working harder than it should be.

It tells us where to look. Just as often, it tells us where to leave alone — and that part matters more than people expect.

Words mean nothing until you hold one /

[이미지 8] photo — 해부 모형이 놓인 책상 alt: Anatomical models used to explain findings to patients / 환자에게 설명할 때 쓰는 해부 모형들

A word like disc means nothing until you can hold one. So we hold one. I'd rather hand you the model and let you turn it over than talk past you in words you have to nod along to.

You should be able to explain your own back to someone else by the time you leave.

A note from the office /

If you've read this far, something has probably been bothering you for a while — long enough that you've started planning your day around it.

I can't promise you a number of visits or a date on the calendar. Bodies don't work that way, and I'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a fixed package. What I can promise is that you'll be looked at carefully, told plainly what I find, and never touched before you understand why.

The door is open. Come in whenever you're ready.
